Wallace A. Rayfield

Wallace Rayfield was the first African American architect in the state of Alabama to practice professionally. He is the second in the history of the United States during that era to practice professionally in the United States. He designed more than 400 buildings across 20 states, 130 of them in Birmingham. Besides architecture, he was recognized for his talent in the printing industry, which supplemented and broadened his architecture practice. He designed newsletters, brochures, plan books, and advertisements.
