Phylicia Ayers-Allen Rashād

She is an American Tony Award-winning actress, singer and stage director. First African American Woman to win Tony as Best Actress.

She was born on June 19, 1948 to Andrew Arthur Allen and poet Vivian Ayers her mother was a poet and her father was a dentist. They resided in Harris County, TX. As a child, Phylicia, her older brother Andrew , and younger sister, Debbie Allen, lived in Mexico and learned the native language to escape US racism during the 1950’s which was prevalent. She also has another brother, Hugh Allen.

She attended Howard University. In 1970 she graduated and acquire her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts. She is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. She was initiated into the Alpha chapter during her tenure at Howard University.

She played the Favorite mom and Matriarch on the COSBY SHOW whom everyone loved and still today does. The show actually ran for 8 seasons the longest family oriented show to date that related to every family the show broke all barrier lines concerning the normal black family. The show depicted that African American households can be positive and have two professional s as parents and still run a strict home.
