SHERMAN L. MAXWELL

(December 18, 1907 – July 16, 2008)

First African American Sportscaster

Sherman was born in Newark, New Jersey, He attended Cental High school and graduated. He then enlisted in the United States Army. After the army he began a broadcasting career in 1929 with New Jersey Radio Station WNJR after many attempts he was given the position through his determination and passion. In 1930 is when he actually was aired.which was WHOM and WRNY while working as a clerk full time in the United States Post Office. His sportscasting stule expanded to include many interviews. He then became an announcer at Ruppert Stadium for the Negro Leagues team, the Newark Eagle and submitted articles on the games. He contributed to the Baseball Digest magazine and published two books THRILLS AND SPILLS IN SPORTS in 1939 and THE GREAT BLACK ATHLETES in 1972.He was inducted into the Newark Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994.

SHERMAN L.. Maxwell passed away at the age of 100 in 2008. Samuel will always hold a place in time as the First pioneer. Samuel had a vision and a passion that drove him to success. He did execute with the best integrity.
