One of the founders of Wilberforce University in Ohio in 1856.
Bishop Payne headed the African Methodist Episcopal Church, he is best remembered for his remarkable efforts on behalf of black self help and other improvement projects. Education and expansion of the Negro church were the two activities which occupied most of his professional career, although he found the time late in his life to record his experiences in a number of valuable publications.
