July 16th, 2023 As per an article in Gymnastics now
Simone Biles returned to national team camp for the U.S. women earlier this week, making her first appearance since before the Tokyo Games in 2021, and she wasted no time proving she means business for her third Olympic push.
Initial camp scores were first reported by The Gymternet on Friday, and a detailed spreadsheet of all verifying routines was subsequently shared by @chrisovitina on Twitter.
Scores are typically shared with athletes and coaches at camp and may be made public by USA Gymnastics (USAG) following the conclusion of camp. Gymnastics Now has reached out to USAG to confirm the validity of the document.
Biles topped the field in the all-around with a 57.650 – nearly a point higher than Rebeca Andrade’s winning all-around total from the 2022 world championships. The 26-year-old scored 14+ across all four events.
All of Biles’ routines had 6.0+ start values, but the most interesting score came on vault, where she competed the Yurchenko double pike (YDP) for a 14.650. While footage of routines has not been made available, based off the International Gymnastics Federation’s (FIG) provisional 6.6 start value for the 2017-2021 Code of Points, the 6.2 value Biles’ camp vault received is in line with the 0.4 devaluation of vaults across the board in the 2022-2024 Code of Points. Since there’s no other 6.2 vault in the women’s code of points, it’s safe to assume this was the YDP.
Biles has yet to compete the YDP in a FIG-sanctioned competition, but when she successfully does, it will be the Biles II on the apparatus.
